Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes tells the story of a musician whose ambitions were both inspired and challenged by the inequities of the society around him. [1] The film follows Roach across seven decades—as a pioneering, master drummer, bandleader and cultural activist--from the revolutionary Bebop Jazz of the 1940s to the Civil Rights years; experiments in Hip Hop, multi-media works and more.
He also played with his daughter Maxine Roach, a Grammy nominated violist. He was inducted into the DownBeat Hall of Fame in 1980 and the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1992. [4] In the mid-1950s, Roach co-led a pioneering quintet along with trumpeter Clifford Brown. In 1970, he founded the percussion ensemble M'Boom.
