Commissioned officers are classified by their area of concentration, or AOC. Just like enlisted MOSCs, AOCs are two digits plus a letter. Related AOCs are grouped together by specific branch of the Army or by broader in scope functional areas (FA).
Structure. The commissioned officers ranks of the United States Army can be split into three categories, from highest to lowest: general officers, field grade officers and company grade officers. [1] General officers encompass the ranks from brigadier general up. [1] Field grade includes major, lieutenant colonel, and colonel. [1]
Army custom is that general officers wear no branch insignia, as they deal with echelons far above the basic branch level. Exceptions, however exist, as with the commandants of the various branches retain the respective insignia and Dean of the U.S. Military Academy wears the Professor, USMA insignia.
