On January 1, 1970, Whitehaven was forcefully annexed by the City of Memphis. [11] Prior to this annexation, the residents of the area did not want to be a part of Memphis. Several years later after Whitehaven became the city's territory, the majority of the white families of the area left and moved to the outer-Memphis suburbs. [12]
Conservation of the Old Forest began in 1901, when Overton Park was created when the 342 acres (1.38 km 2) Lea Woods was purchased by the City of Memphis. 172 acres (0.70 km 2) of its original climax oak-hickory cover was preserved as the Old Forest.
