Construction of the Kauffman Center played a large part in the redevelopment of downtown Kansas City. The project was launched under the 501(c)(3) non-profit laws but, unlike some other civic-construction initiatives, did not use taxpayer funds. The Center operates to this day as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
As of the end of fiscal year 2010, the center had an annual budget expenditure of US$68,111,000. [4] As of the end of fiscal year 2008, the center had 1,119 employees, 587 residents and an annual cost per resident of $175,844. [5] The Shapiro Center was generating and submitting to the state treasury, 65% of its total operational costs.
The Music Center at Strathmore, which seats 1,976, is a concert hall and education center which opened in February 2005. It was funded by a combination of State of Maryland, Montgomery County, and private corporate and local resources to provide a modern concert venue for a wide variety of musical events.
The company was established 1900 in New York's Tin Pan Alley by Maurice Shapiro (1872–1911), who had worked at Adelphi Music publishing company, and his brother-in-law, real-estate dealer Louis Bernstein (1873–1962) [1] (not to be confused with the Louis Bernstein better known as Leonard).
Koston married Dr. Roger L. Shapiro (1927-2002), a research psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. She suffered from a long illness at the end of her life and died in Washington, D.C. [ 2 ] A bequest after her death established the Dina Koston and Roger Shapiro Fund for New Music.
